WhatsApp has started testing a feature that users have been asking for for years: a dedicated logout button that allows people to sign out without deleting the app or wiping all their data.

The feature was discovered in Android beta version 2.26.21.9 and is currently being rolled out gradually to selected beta testers.

Until now, anyone who wanted to take a break from WhatsApp or switch accounts on the same phone had to rely on inconvenient workarounds, such as clearing the app’s data or reinstalling it entirely.

With the new feature, users will be able to log out and return later without losing chats, settings, or other data stored on their device.

According to the information available so far, the logout option will appear within the app’s settings menu and will include a confirmation step before the account is disconnected.

Interestingly, before completing the logout process, WhatsApp will also try to persuade users to stay connected.

Among the alternatives suggested will be:

  • using two accounts on the same device,

  • enabling fingerprint protection,

  • managing notifications,

  • freeing up storage space,

  • and creating backups of conversations.

The strategy suggests that Meta wants to offer users alternatives before they temporarily leave the platform.

For now, the feature remains limited to a small group of Android beta users.

There is still no official release date for the stable version of the feature, and WhatsApp has not confirmed when it will arrive on iPhone.

Even so, the test strongly suggests that one of the most requested features in WhatsApp’s history may finally be on its way to everyone.
