Android Makes Switching Password Managers Easier Than Ever

Google has begun rolling out an important Android update that aims to eliminate one of the biggest frustrations for password manager users.

The new feature allows users to easily and securely import and export passwords and passkeys between Google Password Manager and third-party password management apps.

The functionality is arriving through Google Play Services 26.21 and is being gradually deployed to compatible Android devices.

Until now, switching from one password manager to another could be a complicated and sometimes risky process. Many users had to manually export files, deal with incompatible formats, or rely on migration tools that were not always trustworthy.

With this update, that begins to change.

Android is now adopting the Credential Exchange standard, a technology designed to enable secure credential transfers between different password management services.

In practice, users will be able to move passwords and passkeys between platforms such as Bitwarden, 1Password, and Google Password Manager without complicated migration procedures or vulnerable file exports.

According to Google, all transfers are handled through encrypted processes built directly into the operating system.

This removes the need for CSV files, which for years have been one of the most common methods of exporting passwords—and also one of the least secure.

The update also strengthens support for passkeys, a newer authentication technology widely considered more resistant to phishing attacks and credential theft than traditional passwords.

Beyond security improvements, the update includes enhancements for Google Maps and the Google Play Store.

The Play Store will now display promotional information more clearly and simplify both app pre-registration and automatic installation processes for upcoming releases.

With this change, Android gives users greater freedom to choose the password management service that best fits their needs—without being locked into a single ecosystem.
