Google Brings Premium Gemini Feature to Free Users
Google has started rolling out a Gemini feature to all users that was previously considered one of the key benefits of its paid plans.
The update involves Gemini’s Reasoning Levels, including the Extended mode, which is now available to both free users and subscribers.
The feature is being released across the web, Android, and iPhone versions of the chatbot.
The announcement was confirmed by Josh Woodward, the executive responsible for the Gemini app at Google Labs.
In practice, Extended mode allows the AI to spend more time analyzing a question before generating a response.
The result is typically:
more detailed answers,
deeper explanations,
and stronger reasoning for complex tasks.
Users can currently choose between two primary modes:
Standard — optimized for speed.
Extended — optimized for deeper analysis and reasoning.
Meanwhile, Gemini’s most advanced reasoning mode, known as Deep Think, remains exclusive to subscribers of the Google AI Ultra plan using higher-end models.
However, there is a tradeoff.
Extended mode consumes more computing resources and generally requires more processing capacity during interactions.
For that reason, Google recommends using Standard mode for quick searches and everyday questions, while reserving Extended mode for problems that require more advanced reasoning.
The decision highlights an interesting shift in the AI industry.
Over the past several months, companies such as Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, and others have increasingly expanded access to advanced AI capabilities in an effort to attract new users and strengthen their AI ecosystems.
With this update, millions of Gemini users can now access more sophisticated and thoughtful responses without needing to pay for a subscription.
