Google Introduces Protection Against AI Voice-Cloning Scams on Android

Google has announced a new security feature designed to make AI-powered voice-cloning scams much harder to pull off.

The technology uses a system known as a "digital handshake", which automatically verifies whether a phone call is legitimate before presenting it as trusted to the user.

The feature works entirely in the background and requires no action from the person receiving the call.

The announcement comes at a time when cybercriminals are increasingly using artificial intelligence to clone the voices of family members, friends, and acquaintances in an attempt to deceive victims.

At the same time, spoofing techniques allow attackers to falsify phone numbers, making calls appear to come from trusted contacts.

To combat these threats, the Google Phone app now uses an encrypted verification process built on RCS technology.

When a call is placed, the caller’s device sends an invisible authentication signal that helps verify the identity of the device initiating the call.

If the verification succeeds, the call is marked as legitimate.

If the process fails, Android displays a warning indicating that the caller may not be authentic.

In practical terms, this means that even if someone uses the name and cloned voice of a trusted person, the system may detect that the device behind the call does not match the real contact.

According to Google, this is the first large-scale smartphone solution specifically designed to address AI-powered voice impersonation attacks.

The feature is initially rolling out to Google Pixel devices.

Google says it will also become available on smartphones running Android 12 or later that use the Google Phone app.

The launch highlights how major technology companies are racing to develop new security measures as artificial intelligence makes digital scams increasingly realistic and convincing.
