Microsoft Wants to Turn Copilot Into a Permanent Part of Windows

Microsoft still hasn’t given up on Microsoft Copilot.

After multiple redesigns, criticism, and even growing doubts about the future of the tool, the company is now testing a new strategy:
turning its AI assistant into a permanent sidebar inside Windows 11.

In practice, Copilot would stop feeling like just another standalone app and start behaving more like a built-in part of the operating system itself.

The new update allows users to pin the assistant to either the left or right side of the screen. Once activated, Windows automatically reorganizes all open windows to create dedicated space for Copilot.

The result feels surprisingly similar to the old sidebar widgets from earlier Windows versions… except now powered by artificial intelligence.

Microsoft wants users to keep the assistant permanently visible while working, browsing, or using other applications.

And the message behind the strategy seems very clear:

The goal is no longer to make people “open” Copilot.

The goal is to make Copilot always present.

The move comes after several signs that Microsoft’s original AI strategy may not have delivered the impact the company expected.

Over time, Microsoft has:

  • redesigned Copilot multiple times,

  • removed integrations,

  • changed features,

  • and even acknowledged issues involving the dedicated Copilot keyboard key found on some newer PCs.

Despite that, Microsoft continues pushing one central idea:
the future of Windows will revolve around artificial intelligence.

And now the company appears to be transforming Copilot into something closer to a second intelligent taskbar built directly into the operating system.
